US Army will adopt Vista and Office 2007 by end of this year

windowsCorporate bodies, such as businesses and the government, have traditionally been rather slow when it comes to adopting new software and technologies. This is generally for security purposes, and because they don’t see the point in upgrading from something that works. This frame of mind is not going to change any time soon; Ars Technica is reporting that the US Army is going to finally be fully upgraded to Windows Vista and Office 2007 by the end of 2009, despite Windows 7 quickly approaching.

At the moment, Ars Technica believes that about half of the Army computers are running Office 2007, and 13% are powered by Vista. Marcus D. Good, who is the chief of the Army’s Information Technology Systems Support Division, has stated, “The Army has been testing Vista since its release and has run it through the Army Golden Master program. The Army Golden Master program is responsible for the release of the Army standard baseline configurations for commonly used computing environments within the Army Enterprise Infrastructure, the team responsible for making sure applications that ran on XP will run on Vista.”

It’s unclear how long it will take the Army to make the move from Vista and Office 2007 to Windows 7 and Office 2010 when they are released, but since the changeover will only be fully complete this year, expect it to take a rather long time. It’s not a bad thing, though; the Army is serious business, and they need to be 100% certain that their computers are secure and safe. Previews of Vista for members of the Army are available here and here, to help them get used to it, as well as more efficient.

Dell unveils Nano powered server

dellGreen and cheap

Dell has released a new server, codenamed Fortuna, which in itself wouldn’t be big news if it weren’t for its VIA Nano powerplant.

Based around a 15W CPU which is better suited to netbooks and nettops, the new XS11-VX8 server boasts power consumption of just 20-29W. Although it might seem a bit underpowered compared to most servers, it’s also quite a bit greener, and cheaper, too. The Nano is a 64-bit CPU, and it even offers some virtualization support.

Another advantage is the tiny form factor. The new server is just slightly larger than a 3.5-inch drive, and Dell says you can pack up to six Fortunas per rack unit, or 252 of them in a a 42U rack. Best of all, even getting a bunch of them won’t cost you too much, as Dell is offering them for as low as $400.

Judge investigating Pirate bay bias removed

thepiratebayFor bias

A Judge, who was investigating whether or not the trial judge in the Pirate Bay case was biased, has been removed after it was found she had links to the music and film business.

Judge Ulrika Ihrfelt was assigned to investigate whether the four should be granted a retrial based on revelations that the original trial judge is a member of industry copyright-protection groups. However the Swedish Press looked into Ihrfelt and found out that she was a member of the same groups as the trial judge.

What is amazing is that who ever appointed her to the job seemed to think that they would get away with it. It also shows how much influence the movie and film industry has in the Swedish Judiciary if the country can’t find a judge who has not attended one of its pirating brainwashing love ins.

If it was a mafia organisation who had Judges operating in that way, members of the public would scream blue murder. However if it is an organisation which threatens people with expensive court action if they don’t pay a sum of cash that they pick out of the air, that is OK.

Ihrfelt has been removed from the case. Fredrik Wersall, the appellate court’s president, said the claims of trial bias would be resolved “in a few weeks at the maximum.”

Techies make the best lovers

pornAll to do with the hard drive

A study of British men and women has concluded that techies make the best lovers. They were found to be the most selfless in the sack, the most adventurous and more likely to use gadgets.

Seventy-eight per cent of techies that were questioned also claimed that sex toys were part of their love life. Unusually they didn’t care if they were Open Sourced or proprietary. Eighty-two per cent of IT workers also claimed to consider their partners sexual needs above there own, the highest result from all of those asked.

While IT workers were often not so hot at networking they knew their way around their partner’s schematic. It probably comes from downloading gigabytes of porn every day. In comparison, those who worked in the fitness industry were found to be least likely to use sex toys, with just three in ten using them regularly and were the most selfish lovers.

However IT workers fall fair behind the fitness freaks when it comes to the number of times they get to use their joy stick. IT workers have sex much less than three times a week, well behind officer workers and the fitness fanatics.
